Bacolod City logs 80% hike in leptospirosis cases

BACOLOD CITY - Leptospirosis cases here increased by 80 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year amid the continuing presence of risk factors, data from the City Health Office (CHO) showed on Monday. From January to December 2022, there were 45 reported suspected leptospirosis cases, including 11 deaths, while in the entire 2021, only 25 cases, of which six deaths were reported. In a report, Dr. Grace Tan, head of the CHO Environment Sanitation Division, said 60 percent of those who contracted the disease and also those who died had a history of wading in contaminated water while more than 60 percent were delayed in health-seeking behavior or consultation. The highest number of cases was reported in Barangay Singcang-Airport with seven, followed by Barangay Taculing with five, while the age group with the most number of cases is 21 to 30, the report added.
