The McDonough County Voice To the Editor: State Representative Norine Hammond is being dishonest when she states a progressive tax amendment would raise taxes on families “struggling to make ends meet.” Under the proposal voted on last fall, only income over $250,000 a year would get a tax increase. Is that “struggling”? Give me a break! 97% of Illinois taxpayers would have seen a tax decrease! While the national “relief” bill passed this week will keep Illinois solvent this year, we have a “structural deficit” due mainly to our generous pension system. When will Mrs. Hammond start drawing hers? The article on the front page of last weekend’s “weekender” shows just how bad it is. What state spending is Norine ready to cut? Former House Speaker Michael Madigan announced Thursday his resignation from the Chicago-based House seat heâs held since 1971, a move that was expected after his 36-year reign as speaker came to an end in January. Known as the âVelvet Hammerâ for quietly wielding the vast power he amassed over a half-century, Madiganâs departure from state government is characteristically low-key, with the announcement coming in the form of a lengthy press release, with Madigan thanking his family and staff and touting his legislative accomplishments. ....
