Trước đó, giống rùa biển này từng được phát hiện ở vùng biển gần đảo Jeju, tỉnh Nam và Bắc Gyeongsang, nhưng việc phát hiện rùa ở vùng biển Đông tỉnh Gangwon là điều rất hiếm thấy.
