An update on Princeton’s ongoing efforts to address systemic racism

A professorship in Indigenous studies, grant programs for anti-racism research and new partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are some of the initiatives launched this academic year as part of Princeton’s campus-wide commitment to combat systemic racism.
Last summer, the University announced an initiative to address America’s record of structural inequality and racism as well as Princeton’s place in that history. Now, the University is providing an interim update on these ongoing efforts. An inaugural annual report charting the University’s progress will be released in the fall. ....

Trustee-level ad hoc committee develops principles to govern decisions about naming, renaming and changing iconography

The Ad Hoc Committee on Principles to Govern Renaming and Changes to Campus Iconography, a trustee-level committee charged with developing general principles to govern questions about when and under what circumstances it might be appropriate for the University to remove or contextualize the names and representations of individuals present on the Princeton campus, finalized its recommendations to the University’s Board of Trustees in late March.
The board adopted the committee’s report and recommendations in April. The report is available in full on the ad hoc committee’s website. ....

From coronavirus to the environment, social justice to civic engagement, Princetonians rallied to make 2020 a year of purpose and achievement.

Princetonians demonstrated incredible resilience in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic fighting the virus, pushing forward academically and growing stronger as a community, as shown in the year-in-review video above.
The video features the song “I won’t sleep soundly,” written by first-year student Molly Trueman after attending a Black Lives Matter rally in June, and arranged and performed by Trueman and the Princeton University Glee Club.
The year began with a drumbeat of academic and co-curricular events. Students returned from winter recess, taking final exams in January for the last time before a change in the academic calendar, and then participated in Wintersession classes, and then the start of the spring term. May ....
