Controlled burn happening in Portage today

PORTAGE, Mich. â The City of Portage announced today that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) will conduct a controlled burn in the Gourdneck State Game Area.
This is an area owned and maintained by the MDNR.
The area where the burn will be occurring is in the picture above. Residents in the area can expect to see smoke and may notice MDNR vehicles and staff controlling the burn.
This is one of two planned burns in the Gourdneck State Game Area this spring/summer.

A Portage man is facing charges for the murder of his parents.
The Kalamazoo County Prosecutor s Office is issuing charges of open murder, felony firearm and felon in possession of a firearm against Nicholas Johnson.
Authorities found the bodies of Gary and Laura Johnson on Friday at the Gourdneck State Game Area.
The last time the couple was seen alive was February 3.

PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) UPDATE: Monday, the Portage Department of Public Safety announced that two recently-found bodies have been identified as a couple who went missing in Portage last week.
Previously, Gary and Laura Johnson had been announced as missing after not reporting to work for a few days. A search of their property showed signs of violence inside, and Laura Johnson’s vehicle was missing.

He is currently in custody on unrelated outstanding warrants. A judge set his bond at $100,000, partly due to the circumstances of his parents’ disappearance.
