Former Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the island under military guard in July after a huge crowd stormed his official residence, blaming him for the unprecedented economic crisis.
Rajapaksa, the first Sri Lankan president to quit mid-term, is temporarily sheltering in Thailand, after fleeing Sri Lanka on a military plane to the Maldives and then spending weeks in Singapore.
Sri Lanka's parliament will elect a new President on Wednesday, an official said, as President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's resignation was accepted by the Speaker after the leader fled the country earlier this week.
Saudi Airline flight SV 788 believed to be carrying President Rajapaksa landed at the Singapore Changi International Airport shortly after 7 pm (local time).
