Food remains a family tradition among tribal members in Oklahoma

Tricia Fields Alexander discovered her passion early on. 
“A lot of the girls, their goal was to be the powwow princess,” said Alexander, who is enrolled Muscogee (Creek) and lives in Glenpool. 
“I wanted to be the head cook. I always gravitated to the women with the aprons on.” 
The women who prepared the food for tribal ceremonies and powwows would put her to work washing potatoes or wiping counters. 
“It always made me feel good to be a part of it, to help,” said Alexander, a tribal youth wellness coordinator and owner of Autumn Star Catering. 
As with many American Indians, cooking was a family affair for Alexander. But she credits much of her knowledge of traditional cooking to the tribal ceremonies she attended every summer weekend, including the Cheyenne Sun Dances to which they were invited by her father’s best friend.  ....

Native American painter Brent Learned merges his tribal culture with Pop art sensibilities

A self-proclaimed mama s boy, Brent Learned was entering his senior year at the University of Kansas when he asked his mother what he could do to make her proud. 
She goes, Well, son, I m already proud of you, but if you re asking to make me more proud, I would really appreciate it if you would paint your culture, said Learned, a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma.
So, I started doing Native American paintings, and then from there, I kind of discovered other Native American artists. . The way I look at it is I m telling my ancestors story . and I feel like I m keeping their voice alive through my art. ....
