In some of the larger cities nearby paying as much as 30, 40, 50 an hour. with a shortage of officers nationwide, all seven officers have been getting job offers from other departments with better pay, better hours, and incentives for signing on. blind-sided by it but we re resilient and we will move forward. it s hard. just last month goodhue s police chief sounded the alarm on the recruiting challenges they were facing and warned city leaders the mass resignation was possible. like i said, this has been three weeks now, 0 applicants and 0 prospects. i have called everyone around for the youngest guys out there getting into the game. nobody is getting into the game. other small towns across the country are seeing this happen as well. last month in warner, oklahoma, population 1500, the entire five officer police force stepped down due to being overworked, ....
partisan back and forth out of it, and you just and you just look at the actual results, you wind up with a town that loses its entire police force! that s a problem. dana: i have a list here of all the major cities from seattle and denver to new york city, san francisco, all of them have had major drops since 2020. the highest is up to 45%. actually, i m sorry, portland had a 60% drop in applications since 2020. but i thought this was a super interesting story this morning. we did it on newsroom with garrett teney and i thought it was about goodhue, minnesota. then he started talking about all these other small towns especially in the midwest and some of these towns have zero police. so these town councils, i know it s difficult, local government is the hardest government. but you have to get your priorities straight because your number one job is public safety. if you don t do it, the people will. they will protect themselves. somehow. but one thing that people cannot do is do ....
Now is scrambling to keep people safe after the entire police force quit en mass. goodhue s police chief had sounded the alarm over recruitment issues. it s one of many small towns that is now facing a major cop shortage. garrett tenney joins us from the midwest newsroom with all the details. what s your understanding as to why these officers quit? well, a big part is money. there are so few people willing to be cops and cities of all sizes are desperate to have more officers. so the large cities can afford to pay cops more are scooping up a lot of the officers from smaller towns that just don t pay as well. that s what happened in the small town of goodhue, minnesota, when all seven of its officers sent in their letters of resignation last week. several trading in their $22 an hour jobs to join other departments nearby paying as much as 40 to 50 an hour and offering better hours to go with ....
