Pennsylvania State Rep. Ed Gainey speaks to a crowd on the North Shore on Monday, May 10, 2021.
As Pittsburgh’s mayoral campaign entered its final weeks, campaign finance records show Mayor Bill Peduto decisively outspending and outraising his rivals. But state Rep. Ed Gainey could yet erase that advantage thanks to one union’s unprecedented level of support even as he complained Monday about the tenor of the campaign.
Financial reports filed late last week show that, as of two weeks before the May 18th election, Peduto had $206,628.78 in his bank account. That amount was inflated by a $12,500 loan Peduto made to his own bid in April a move candidates sometimes make to boost their cash haul to a more impressive round number. Peduto went into the home stretch of the campaign with more than triple the amount of money held on hand by Gainey, who reported having $67,475.78 as of last week. ....

New Mailer From Outside-Spending Group Escalates Attacks In Mayoral Campaign

A new mailer from pro-Peduto group Good Jobs Pittsburgh seeks to portray rival Ed Gainey as an ally of former GOP House Speaker Mike Turzai
Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto and state Rep. Ed Gainey were once political allies. But the mayoral race between the two men is growing increasingly ugly, thanks in no small part to outside spending groups.
An independent-expenditure committee tied to Gainey, Justice for All,
opened up the fight two weeks ago when it blasted Peduto as having failed to address inequality in an online ad. But Good Jobs Pittsburgh which is backed by a service-workers union and other labor groups is returning the favor in a mailer that denounces Gainey with an arguably lopsided depiction of his voting record in Harrisburg. ....

Gloves Come Off In Pittsburgh's Mayoral Race, As Outside Groups Get Involved

Veteran civil-rights activist Tim Stevens says he didn t authorize his appearance in this attack ad.
The first real attack ad of Pittsburgh’s mayoral campaign aired by the kind of outside-spending group that local politicos have been expecting landed this week. And one of the people feeling stung by it isn’t even a candidate.
“We felt like our credibility was at stake,” said Tim Stevens, a longtime Black civic leader and founder of Black Political Empowerment Project, after seeing himself appear in an ad attacking Bill Peduto.
Stevens appears for about two seconds in the spot, created by a union-backed committee called Pittsburgh Justice for All.” Though he is not named in the spot, he can be seen asking “for whom is [Pittsburgh] most livable?” a statement Stevens says was excerpted from a 2019 press conference on health outcomes for Black women in the city. The ad strings that together with news clips and newspaper headlines to conclude “After ....
