The Golders Green Hippodrome became a pop-up vaccination centre last week as part of an interfaith drive to promote the Covid-19 jab across communities.
Markaz El Tathgheef (MTE) – the Islamic community centre based at the Hippodrome – worked with Faiths Forum for London and the Barnet Multi-Faith Forum to hold the event, which counted rabbis and a local Buddhist group among its guests.

The owners of the Golders Green Hippodrome are seeking planning approval to change its use from a church to a place of worship .
The Markaz El Tathgheef Es Eslami (MTE) has been operating at the Hippodrome since taking over the venue in 2017.
The Arabic term Markaz translates as community centre .
MTE believes using the venue as an Islamic community centre should fall within the existing planning permission, given in 2007: To use building as a church to enrich community with schemes for children, unemployed, elderly etc. To hold concerts, conferences, drama and dance festivals. ....

Before Carry On typecast her, Barbara Windsor was a brilliant kitchen sink star | Peter Bradshaw

Windsor was the naughty-but-nice “dolly bird” – and only that ancient term will do for the way she was eternally cast as the smutty, sexist, seaside postcard figure. She was the other side of the supposed womanhood coin from Hattie Jacques – she and Hattie were condemned to be the anode and cathode of Carry On femininity: sex-bomb or battleaxe.
How funny were the Carry Ons really? My view is: not as funny as we always find ourselves thinking and hoping. People who affect to think they’re great are just remembering a few gags and a handful of clips, or really just one clip: Barbara’s bra pinging off. Sit down and actually try to watch a single Carry On film all the way through and you’ll have your nostalgia sorely tested. They were pretty ropey compared to what Britain could do in the theatre and TV. ....

ROGER LEWIS revels in the riotous life of Barbara Windsor

comments
National treasure Dame Barbara Windsor died on Thursday night, aged 83. This was long-expected, but it is still a shock she was indestructible showbiz royalty. As Joan Collins rightly says: Showbusiness has lost a legend.
Her final years were clouded by Alzheimer s disease, which first became apparent in 2014 when she could no longer learn her lines and she d always been what is called in the profession a quick study .
Through sheer persistence, Babs managed to keep playing Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders for a further two years. Once she could no longer perform, she channelled her energy into the Alzheimer s Society. In an open letter to the Government, she wrote: My heart goes out to the many, many people who are really struggling to get the care they so desperately need. ....
