A former Ohio treasure hunter jailed over his refusal to reveal the whereabouts of 500 missing coins made from gold found in a historic shipwreck has been stuck behind bars for nearly five years.
Research scientist Tommy Thompson’s unique legal woes stem from the 161 investors who shelled out $12.7 million for him to find the S.S. Central America, a gold rush-era ship sunk by a hurricane in 1857. There was thousands of pounds of gold aboard the vessel, also called “The Gold Ship,” when it vanished off the coast of South Carolina.
