In the Old Testament books of prophecy, the God of Israel used picture after stunning picture, story after story to somehow reach the wandering, rebellious hearts of His people. Sometimes His metaphors were shocking and graphic; at other times tender and poignant. He wanted His people to understand the depths of His love for them, and to warn them of the dangers and sorrows that awaited them if they continued to walk in rebellion. Jesus, of course, never stopped telling stories and sketching memorable word pictures. It was His favorite way of teaching. “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants…. The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning…. Suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one….” ....
A story that haunts me is Jesus’ encounter with a nameless, wealthy young man as he made his final journey toward Jerusalem. Here was an important civic leader, a youthful climber with a prestige, bearing, and bank account that would have been the envy of many older men in Judea. But there was a hollowness in his chest that led him ever so close to the God adventure of a lifetime. For all his status and personal wealth, this man had a hungry heart. The gospel of Mark tells us that he ran to Jesus, falling on his knees in the dust before him. You know the story. He asked Jesus what he had to do to inherit eternal life. He knew the commands, and he’d kept them all since he was a boy. ....
The term “God Adventure” sounds kind of intriguing and exciting, doesn’t it? Even a little mysterious! If you have an adventuresome spirit, just those words may make you want to explore what a God adventure is – learn more about it! A “God Adventure” could be following God’s leading to take a new job. It could be a missions trip or a move to a new city. Maybe you’re actually going to commit to leading a Bible study at your church or reach out to a needy family in your area.
