who sided with him or is it going to be folks like mitch mcconnell and other republican leaders who say you ve got to nominate people who can get elected. mark, i have to ask you, because it s not like the backing off here. you had steve bannon talking today about the fight is going to continue to be vicious here. can a divided, really more than divided, but an internally competitive and internally angry, combative republican party, can it win in 2018 and 2020? all depends where you think they can win. i think the house of representatives is very much in da danger of going republican. until last night, there was little talk that republicans could take back the united states senate, but there s a little sliver of hope now for democrats at this point. head iing into 2020, i can t imagine that president trump is not going to get a real primary right now. to your point, gloria s and april s point, the party is so divided at this point. 32% approval rating nationally

president obama of quote taking chunks out of the second amendment, and telling me that hillary clinton wants to take everyone s guns basically away. gloria, on the heels of the president s announcement yesterday on gun control, trump insisted he had no choice but to protect the second amendment. that is going to play well among conservative republicans. sure. absolutely. it will play well among conservative republicans. he understands that and look, i think what the argument he is making is the argument, the slippery slope argument that we ve heard time and time again which is essentially if you do anything to expand a background checks in any way, shape or form, that would lead to some kind of gun registry and that in turn would lead to some kind of confiscation of your guns and he made the clear point about hillary clinton that she would be quote worse than president obama as he puts it and it s clear he s taking direct aim at her and saying that she would
from north carolina which asks the leadership to make sure that nobody who is running for any of these posts including the speaker has any misdeeds in his or her background done while they are in congress. this certainly raised a lot of questions, kevin mccarthy was asked about it whether that letter was directed at him and whether it had anything to do with him dropping out and he said no, walter jones talked to our colleague about it and insisted that there was no particular person or particular incident he was talking about but then went on to refer to some scandals that brought other speakers or almost speakers down like bob livingston for example. it s an odd letter and issue that s been flying around capitol hill. gloria, i know you ve been talking to your sources. what have they been telling you? congressman mccarthy after he made the mistake on benghazi,
