As Nigerians join the rest of the world to celebrate the availability of effective COVID-19 vaccines, human behaviour is expected to continue to drive the spread of the virus until the vaccines are widely available.
Although it is cheering news that at least two of the COVID-19 vaccine candidates have been approved, they are not yet widely available, hence Nigerians need to appreciate that vaccine protection is a long process and that a vaccine is not a magic bullet that would make the infection disappear in an instant. ....

Kenya To 'Receive First Covid-19 Vaccine Batch In January'


 
Kenya expects to receive its first batch of a Covid-19 vaccine next month, Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe has been quoted by Nation Africa newspaper as saying.
Mr Kagwe said that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine will be made available. He added that the vaccine was far cheaper and easier to store when compared to the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.
But the Oxford vaccine has not yet been approved for emergency use in any country.
Kenya ordered 24 million doses through the Global Vaccine Alliance Initiative (Gavi) last week.
This will be enough to cover at least 20% of the country’s population.
Top of the list of those who will be vaccinated first are healthcare workers, police officers, the elderly and teachers. ....

Kenya To ‘Spend Sh10 Billion On Covid-19 Vaccine’
Kenya has reportedly ordered 24 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine, with the Ministry of Health submitting its request to the Global Vaccine Alliance Initiative (Gavi) last week.
Citing Ministry of Health officials, the Star newspaper reported that the government will spend Sh10 billion ($89m; £66m) for the vaccines.
Mid this year Gavi said each dose will cost about $3 (about Sh320).
The amount is heavily discounted by Gavi thanks to donations from the World Bank, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a number of developed countries, among others.
The 24 million doses will be enough to cover 20 percent of the country’s population. ....
