The peace mission to Somalia is ill-advised
Amid the security crisis ravaging the nation, a contingent of 144 police officers was recently deployed in Somalia to help secure the country. The Somalian Police Operations coordinator, Daniel Ali Gwambal, said the Nigerian contingent would work with their officers in providing personality escort and protection services, training and assisting the Police Force in public order management, conducting joint patrols with their Somali counterparts and securing key government installations.
First, we recognise that the fact that a nation is beset with internal security challenges does not absolve it of its international obligations. Moreover, in successive United Nations assignments, the Nigerian police contingent has repeatedly stood out for distinction. The most foolish thing I have read this year is the utterly ridiculous defence of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, by the Buhari Presidency.
That statement, by Garba Shehu, the ‘Any Government In Power’ former spokesman to a Peoples Democratic Party government, is only bested in its stupidity, by the August 2017 statement by the same shameless Garba, that the President was working from home after his over 100 days medical tourism to London, because ‘rats damaged his office’.
The idea that Pantami was a juvenile and did not know what he was doing between 2010 and 2015 is just the type of outlandish and Goebbelsian Taqiyya that we have come to expect from the Buhari regime. In 2014, the All Progressives Congress called for my arrest as one of President Jonathan’s spokesmen. Pantami is older than me. ....

In a bid to support Nigeria’s efforts in its ongoing war against insurgency perpetrated by Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, in the north east, the United States Embassy, Abuja, has donated to the Nigerian Police Force, equipment worth $325,000.
The equipment donated by the U.S. include bulletproof vests, bulletproof helmets, goggles and 20 ballistic shields, a tent, mosquito nets, first-aid boxes, hygiene products, heavy-duty flashlights and foldable mattresses, to the 500 officers of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) serving in Borno state where the insurgents have a strong hold.
The situation in Borno State has worsened significantly in the past few months with tens of thousands being sent to their graves in gruesome murders. The state which is the birthplace of Boko Haram’s armed uprising has been the hardest hit by the terrorists as they have stepped up attacks and kidnappings and laying ....
