During Ciarra McClinton’s senior year at Guyer High School in Denton, Texas, Baylor University recruited the accomplished young debater and offered her a scholarship to come to Waco. And while her freshman year as a Baylor debater was different than what she imagined (with the COVID-19 pandemic), she still managed to win her first college competition. McClinton’s win was another in a long line of victories that have maintained Baylor’s excellence in debate for more than a century.
Baylor’s first intercollegiate debate took place in 1893 against the University of Texas, which means that Baylor has been facing other universities in debate for longer than it has in football or any other sport. Since that first contest, Baylor has won the National Debate Tournament three times and has placed teams in the Final Four of the national tournament nine times.  ....

Almost from the time when Baylor University began classroom instruction in May 1846, Baylor students have honed their abilities to reason, research and defend ideas and policies through meeting their peers in formal debates.
In the University’s early days in Independence from 1845-1886, and during the first four decades of its residence in Waco beginning in 1886, the student literary societies  ––  the Philomathesians, the Erisophians and others   ––  dominated much of student extracurricular life. In the absence of intercollegiate athletics or other modern entertainments, debates held each month within the societies, or debates held between students representing rival literary societies, became some of the most popular events on campus. ....

WACO, Texas (May 12, 2021) – Robert F. Darden III, B.S.Ed. 76, M.J., professor of journalism, public relations and new media, Master Teacher and founder of the Black Gospel Music Restoration Project at Baylor University, has been honored as a Piper Professor of 2021 for the state of Texas by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation.
The Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation honors 10 professors per academic year across the state for their dedication to the teaching profession and for their outstanding academic, scientific and scholarly achievement. Each Piper Professor receives a certificate of merit, a gold pin and a $5,000 honorarium. ....
