Perplexed by 'perplexing idea'

In a letter to the editor on Jan. 2, Glenn McRae of Burlington stated that rural Vermonters owning guns is a “perplexing idea” in the face of suicides and accidental deaths. I only ask because Mr. McRae lives in Burlington, which as we all know is an urban area that has its own police force. A depleted police force to be sure thanks to the city council, but a police force nonetheless. While residents of the Queen City can call police in an emergency and have a police officer at their door in minutes, it’s different in rural communities. Is ....

Do gun rights make us safe?

I was disappointed to read the comments of retiring state Sen. Joe Benning about legislative proposals requiring safe storage of firearms following the tragic death of a 3-year-old in Barre.  He has a reputation as a thoughtful legislator, and I found his analysis that we need to have guns to defend ourselves in rural communities perplexing, overriding the common-sense idea that children should not accidentally have access to guns, accidentally shooting themselves, or for others to have access to guns resulting in suicide, or for the gun owners themselves to accidentally shoot themselves.
