I was raised on Depot Street, says Jerry Sternberg, grandson and son of pioneer depot traders, Sigfred and Joseph Sternberg.
Depot Street in the River Arts District in the 1930s was three eras distant from the current renaissance. Industries had once lined the river and railroad tracks, with a grand Southern Railway Passenger Station forming the hub across from the Glen Rock Hotel.
The industries, plagued periodically by floods, started going out of business in the 1940s. Junk yards made economic use of the blighted area. In the late 1970s, artists began colonizing the empty factory and warehouse spaces; RiverLink and the Preservation Society jump-started the current renaissance with the reclamation of historic structures. ....
