When the Glen Helen Association purchased the 1,125-acre Glen Helen Nature Preserve in 2020 from Antioch College, as part of the deal the association assumed responsibility for a shuttered power plant owned by the college. The plant, constructed in 1929, is located across the street from the campus on the edge of the Glen. It is now a hazardous site that includes a large oil tank full of unused diesel fuel, coal ash residue and friable asbestos all of which pose a serious threat to the natural resources of the Glen and to village groundwater, according to Glen Helen Association Director Nick Boutis in a recent interview. ....

Utility-scale solar firm applies for state permit • The Yellow Springs News


A Texas company looking to build a 1,500-acre, 175-megawatt solar power project in Greene County has applied for a permit.
On Friday, April 16, Vesper Energy of Houston, Tx., submitted its 136-page application, with 1,055 pages of additional figures and appendices, to the Ohio Power Siting Board, a state office with the authority to approve or deny the project.
Since 2017, the company, once part of the Australian-owned Lendlease, has been seeking leases and preparing studies in the project area, located just southeast of Yellow Springs in portions of Miami Township, Xenia Township and Cedarville Township. The company now has 43-year leases on close to 1,300 acres from 17 landowners. ....

When offering an assessment of the first six months since the Glen Helen Association assumed ownership of the Glen Helen Nature Preserve, Executive Director Nick Boutis was reflective.
A friends group of donors, advocates and the volunteers who have supported the Glen for 60 years, the Glen Helen Association has, in the last six months, “stepped into the role of the owner, the operator, the governing board of Glen Helen, all within a global pandemic that forced the shutdown of all of our educational programs,” Boutis said.
Recalling the events of the past year in which the Covid-19 global pandemic almost forced the closure of the nature preserve deeply loved by the community, Boutis laid out the picture from a year ago. ....
