Final days to tender for $3m Gladstone region project

Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun has called for tenders for a construction project worth up to $3m in the Gladstone region.
Tenders opened for the construction of the Control Room near the site’s red mud processing area on March 3, which was listed on website EstimateOne.
Construction companies have just four days remaining to submit their tenders.
The project requires work involving 17 trades.
Entry to the control room is via an bridge onto an external veranda with an outdoor area for workers.
The elevated control room will feature offices and workstations for a Team Leader, a process technician, plus four additional workstations for staff. ....

Landowners in many Central Queensland areas are set to receive their new land valuations this month, with local economic conditions reflecting mixed fortunes both on the coast and inland.
The Valuer-General’s Property Market report details the CQ areas that were valued most recently - Banana Shire, Rockhampton and Livingstone Shire.
The best overall news from the report was for primary producers, whose land value increased in all three regions, while pockets of the residential market saw rises in Rockhampton and Yeppoon only.
Land used for primary production in Banana Shire, Rockhampton and Livingstone Shire all increased in value according to the Valuer-General’s latest report. ....

CQ University STEM expo educates and inspires generations

“I want to work with cars when I finish school,” he said.
“Cars are such cool machines because I like anything with motors.
“There are all different designs of cars that are capable of all different things.”
The second annual CQUniversity STEM expo featured technology and information associated with everything from saving the Great Barrier Reef, turtle nesting and habitats, and coastal marine ecosystem research, to responsible waste management and protecting Gladstone Harbour.
Students and teachers from primary school level to university post graduates absorbed the knowledge on display at Gladstone’s marina campus.
Guest of honour was Queensland chief scientist Professor Hugh Possingham, who presented a key note address on the importance of science and mathematics in shaping the future. ....

REVEALED: Ship to dock in hours with no quarantine sorted

A quarantine location is yet to be announced by Queensland Health for a ship thats crew must come ashore in Gladstone at the weekend.
The Marshall Islands flagged MV Astra Centaurus is scheduled to dock in Gladstone on Saturday, according to Maritime Safety Queensland.
The 196 metre long bulk carrier was built in 2012 and is owned by US based Pegasus Maritime Enterprises.
The ship docked in the Korean port of Donghae for three days last month, departing on February 7, bound for the port of Cebu, in the Philippines.
On March 3, after unloading cargo in Cebu which reduced the ships draught from 11.8 metres to 6.7 metres, the Astra Centaurus set sail for Gladstone. ....

Two-wheel heaven: Gladstone's Easter All Bike Classic

âAt last count we had about 140 nominations, we are hoping for around 200 bikes.â
To make the All Bikes show more interesting than a generic display, Mr Harland said they were encouraging owners to contribute the story of the bike.
âWe are after bikes with stories, so on the entry forms there is a section where we are asking people to tell us the story, or history of the bike, in up to 300 words,â he said.
âLike this is grandadâs bike, I have owned it since new, or I used to race it back in the day.
âWe are printing a placard to be put on a stand to go with each bike, just to tell its story.â ....
