Greece confirms 2,188 new coronavirus infections on Friday, 56 death


Greece registered 2,188 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, with 5 of these identified at entry points to the country, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) reported on Friday.
Greece has confirmed 373,881 infections from the start of the pandemic (daily change: +0.6 pct). In the confirmed cases of the last 7 days, 50 infections are related to travel from abroad and 2,629 to other confirmed cases.
There are also 56 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the total of pandemic victims to 11,322. Of these, 95.2 pct had an underlying condition and/or were 70 years old.
A total of 677 patients are on ventilators in hospitals. Their median age is 67 years and 83 pct have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or more. Another 2,255 have been discharged from ICUs since the pandemic began. ....

Tsipras: Greece should pull out all the stops to back Biden on patent waiver


Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras on Friday repeated a call to the government to back an initiative by U.S. President Joe Biden calling for a waiver on Covid-19 vaccine patents, in a statement to the Greek daily “Efimerida ton Syntakton”. He also criticised the response from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on this issue.
“Only Kyriakos Mitsotakis could be capable, for the sake of his image, to downgrade an issue that is crucial for millions of peoples’ lives, such as that of vaccine patents, to the ludicrousness of ‘these are my principles and if you don’t like them….well, I have others,’ as Groucho Marx used to say,” the main opposition leader commented. ....

Feverish preparations for re-opening of restaurants, bars, cafes but restrictions on movement remain


Deputy Minister for Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias announced today that movement between municipalities will be allowed as of tomorrow, Greek Orthodox Holy Thursday, but that mandatory reporting via SMS of the hour and purpose of one’s movement will be extended until 15 May, when the government has decided that tourism from abroad will be permitted and citizens will be allowed to travel between prefectures.
Until now everyone has been required to report all movement by messaging the special 13033 line while movement to another prefecture was prohibited and movement between municipalities was permitted only on weekends.
