ZeroZeroZero review: globetrotting narcotics thriller

Propulsive, ambitious and more than a little addictive, ZeroZeroZero uses the framework of a global drug deal gone wrong to explore the motivations and betrayals of those who grease the wheels of this sprawling black market machine. Adapted from the nonfiction book by the Italian investigative journalist and author Roberto Saviano, this eight-episode series – which was premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2019 and is now streaming on Sky Atlantic in the UK, Amazon in the US and a wealth of platforms across multiple countries – is a show that demands its viewers pay attention as it hops around in both geography (dialogue is in six languages, with subtitles moving as quickly as the action) and chronology. But those who invest will be rewarded with intelligent, compelling drama of the highest calibre.

ZeroZeroZero Season 1 Review: A racy narco drama with human relationships at its core

Upam Buzarbaruah, TNN, Updated: Mar 2, 2021, 05.30 PM IST ZeroZeroZero would have been this run of the mill crossover between Narcos and The Wire had it not been for Emma and Chris’s relationship. The siblings’ absolute love for each other gives the violent crime drama a humane touch. Bound by a promise to her father to always look after Chris and desperate to close a drug deal Edward had brokered just ahead of his death, Emma ends up in the eye of a storm raked up by Stefano (Giuseppe De Domenico), the vengeful grandson of Ndrangheta boss Don Minu (Adriano Chiaramida) the buyer in the said deal. Then there’s the bloodbath in the quest for power and revenge on two shores of the Atlantic Stefano baying for his grandfather’s blood in Italy and army lieutenant Manuel (Harold Torres) raging his own bloody war to get to the top of the narco food chain in Mexico.
