Cruz blocks vote on Biden Commerce secretary nominee over Huawei concerns

“I’ll lift the hold when the Biden admin commits to keep the massive Chinese Communist Party spy operation Huawei on the Entity List,” Cruz tweeted in response to a report from Bloomberg Business that he had blocked a vote on Raimondo.
Cruz’s block comes after over a week of criticism from both House and Senate Republicans of Raimondo’s comments on Huawei during her confirmation hearing.

The Commerce Department under the Trump administration added Huawei, one of the largest 5G equipment manufacturers in the world, to its “entity list,” effectively blacklisting the company over concerns it posed an espionage threat due to ties to the Chinese government. ....

GOP warns Biden nominees on hold until after impeachment

Top Senate Republicans said Wednesday that there are unlikely to be additional votes on Biden Cabinet picks until after the impeachment trial.
Republicans are pointing to the schedule as the reason for the holdup, arguing that Democrats chose to take up the budget resolution, which will eat up the Senate’s schedule until at least Friday.
The Senate is then poised to start former President Trump

“We re not intentionally trying to slow it down but the Democrats have chosen the agenda, and they ve chosen to do the budget resolution, so if there s a delay in nominations, it s because of their choice,” said Sen. John Cornyn ....

Biden's Commerce secretary pick says Section 230 'needs some reform'

Raimondo voiced similar concerns during her confirmation hearing, noting that she has seen the impact of misinformation narratives in Rhode Island.

“I think platform accountability is important. I ve seen in my own state that misinformation hurts people misinformation posted anonymously or otherwise can hurt people,” Raimondo said. “So we have to hold these companies accountable, we need platform accountability, but of course that reform would have to be balanced with the fact that these businesses rely upon user-generated content for their innovation and created many thousands of jobs.”
Trump had sought to repeal Section 230 through an executive order calling for the NTIA to submit a request to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for the law to be reconsidered. His executive order was issued shortly after Twitter fact-checked some of his posts about mail-in voting. Twitter has since permanently banned Trump from their platform. ....
