West Dundee Troop 32 creates geocache at Schweitzer Woods

On Feb. 21, members of Scouts BSA Troop 32 West Dundee, with help from Scout BSA Troop 2 Elgin, placed a geocache at the Kane County Forest Preserve s Schweitzer Woods, located at 16N690 Sleepy Hollow Road in West Dundee.
A geocache is a treasure box hidden along a hiking trail for the public to find using coordinates, a mobile phone, and a GPS app. Many caches contain treasures, and the Troop 32 geocache is no exception. ....

Michelle Kershner, M.Ed., professor of mathematics, is a 2021 recipient of the American Association of Community Colleges Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty award.
One of only 23 recipients nation-wide, the award is recognition for faculty members making a difference in the community college classroom.
 
Award criteria include demonstrating a passion for the students and the classroom, show a willingness to support students inside and outside of the classroom, be inclined to participate in college committees, and go above and beyond what is required to ensure that students are successful in their academic endeavors. ....

The Writers Center at Elgin Community College continues the Spring 2021 Reading Series.
Due to ongoing social distancing practices, the events will take place virtually. All readings begin at 7:30 p.m.
 
Author Kevin Brockmeier joins the series on Thursday, March 18.
Brockmeier is the author of The Ghost Variations: One Hundred Stories, the novels The Illumination, The Brief History of the Dead, and The Truth About Celia, and the story collections Things That Fall from the Sky, and The View from the Seventh Layer. ....

This month, naturalists are demonstrating how to tap for maple syrup with in-person and online programs across the suburbs.

The warmer, sunny days and cool nights of March encourage maple trees to produce their sweetest sap. Learn more about the process of making maple syrup at events around the suburbs this month.
Cook County
 
The Forest Preserves of Cook County is offering Sap s Rising at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through March 21, at the River Trail Nature Center, 3120 Milwaukee Ave. in Northbrook. Walk in the sugar maple forest to learn about the sweet process of maple syrup making. All participants are required to wear masks and practice physical distancing. Registration is required for this free event by calling River Trail at (847) 824-8360. ....

Peg and John Haskins, owners of Viking Travel Service in Westmont and Naperville, are Marklund s 2021 Friend of the Year.
Marklund, a west suburban nonprofit organization that serves children and adults with profound developmental disabilities, honored the couple at its recent Top Hat Ball virtual fundraising event.
 
The Haskins, who reside in Lombard, initially connected with Marklund in 1997 when they supported the first Top Hat Ball with a cruise donation. ....
