Result ‘48 and They got ace-like performances, but one shone brilliantly. Roger Erickson pitched a complete game one-hitter, shutting out ‘48 2-0 to push ‘81 one game closer to a bracket escape. Erickson allowed just two baserunners in his Maddux, a Mickey Vernon single and Sherry Robertson walk the only blemishes through 99 pitches. On the opposing rubber, Walt Masterson nearly matched Erickson’s performance, allowing three hits over 6.2 innings. However, one of those hits left the Senators playing from behind, as Roy Smalley opened the bottom of the fourth by lining Masterson’s second pitch into the right field bullpen for a solo home run. ....
‘81 in his five-plus innings of work, he was no match for Camilo Pascual. Pascual allowed just five hits over seven innings as he and Bud Byerly combined to shut out ‘81 5-0 and send them into the finals. While Pascual kept his shutout going, Havens lost his in the sixth. Until that inning, he had allowed only four hits and walked three. But Pete Runnels opened the sixth with a second-pitch single, Jim Lemon’s subsequent double putting men on second and third with nobody out. Havens worked Courtney to a 1-2 count before he singled in Runnels, and Lou Berberet singled home Lemon on the next pitch. ....
‘48 loses 3-1 ‘48 had the opportunity to extend their quarterfinal to a winner-take-all fifth game, but let it slip away in the seventh. Two batters after Gil Coan’s RBI double tied the score, Cass Michaels lined a bases-clearing double to provide the final margin of ‘51’s 6-3 win that sent ‘48 into the Manfred Regional. Both teams put runs on the board in the second, but ‘51 took the lead after Sam Mele’s two-run homer wiped out Al Evans’ RBI single. In the top of the sixth, however, ‘48 lined three singles to tie the score again and put runners on the corners, setting up Junior Wooten’s lead-changing sacrifice fly. ....
