After over 406 days of picketing for a just redundancy settlement, former Debenhams workers put down their placards this week and are walking away with their “heads held high”.
It comes as a majority of former Debenhams staff voted to accept the offer of a €3 million training fund.
Former employees said that the settlement does not come anywhere close to the honouring of the four weeks’ pay per year’s service redundancy that was signed off with their former employer, but rather that they had fought “as hard as was possible”. ....

How Covid-19 and Brexit are changing the way we shop


When shoppers do venture back to city centres and shopping centres later this year, things are going to look and feel very different. 
The Covid-19 pandemic has rapidly accelerated a move towards online shopping and any high street brand that was already flailing will have disappeared from Irish towns and cities, bringing with them the loss of thousands of Irish jobs.
Many of the absences will be British brands including the eleven Debenhams department stores on shopping streets from Dublin and Cork to Newbridge, Galway, Limerick, Tralee and Waterford.
Other stores that will be gone include Topshop, Topman, Dorothy Perkins, Wallis and Miss Selfridge. ....

A UNION HAS WRITTEN to the Taoiseach informing him that Debenhams workers have rejected the Labour Court’s suggested dispute resolution between former workers and the British retail chain.
The proposal document brokered by the Labour Court’s Kevin Foley had suggested setting up a €3 million fund to provide ex-Debenhams workers with training, education, career guida ....
