Over the past weekend, Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) anointed Armin Laschet, the unassuming, friendly-faced prime minister of North Rhine-Westphalia state, as its chairman.
Laschet is not exactly a star on the world stage, but remember the name: Statistically, a Christian Democrat is the odds-on favorite for the German chancellor’s job.

The event, which took place on January 15 (local time), was chaired by Prof. Daniela De Ridder, Vice Chair of the Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs and its subcommittee on Civilian Crisis Prevention, Conflict Management and Integrated Action.
