Ashlee Younce 'doing extremely well' after receiving new kidney

ASHLAND When the call came, Becki Younce admits, she let it go to voicemail.
In was around 5 p.m. Monday, and she had just arrived home after taking her 16-year-old daughter, Ashlee, to Akron for dialysis.
Ashlee had been placed on a waiting list to receive a kidney transplant from a deceased donor in January 2020 because of end-stage renal failure. For months, they had traveled to Akron Children s Hospital three times a week for dialysis an hour to get there, four hours at the hospital and another hour home.
I thought it was an appointment reminder, because we were supposed to meet with a doctor in Cincinnati for a Zoom meeting on Tuesday, Younce said. She was on the phone, paying some bills, so she didn t answer. When the phone rang again five minutes later, she thought maybe the appointment was being canceled. ....

Gilbert Furniture Santa returns to downtown Ashland store window

ASHLAND - Santa Claus is back.
After being absent from downtown for more than a decade, the animatronic Santa figure that was a staple in Gilbert Furniture store s holiday window displays has been restored and returned to its place of honor, compliments of the Ashland County Historical Society.
The building at 105 W. Main St. now houses Uniontown Brewing Co., but Santa looks right at home in the front window, standing next to a festive tree.
I think it s awesome, said Sandra Tunnell, executive director of Ashland Main Street. I think it works so well, especially at Uniontown, because they do appreciate the history of Gilbert. The decorations that they have all over are the decorations that they found while they were working in the building. ....

ASHLAND - Five people stood waiting in the parking lot of Union Lofts Apartments on Thursday afternoon, bundled to stay warm in the wintry chill. Chatting, they looked to the northeast, toward Sugarbush Drive, and they listened for sirens.
It was Ashlee Younce s 16th birthday, and she and her family were waiting for a special celebration to begin.
Just around the corner, in the parking lot of the Ashland Home Depot, family friend Patrick Buckley of Elyria was watching as vehicles assembled to parade past Ashlee s home.

ASHLAND - A former substitute teacher accused of inappropriate contact with two middle school girls remains free on bond pending sentencing after being found guilty of two counts of gross sexual imposition.
Thomas R. Mole, 39, of Evergreen Street, was found guilty of the third-degree felony in the Ashland County Court of Common Pleas on Friday, according to a news release from the office of Ashland County Prosecutor Chris Tunnell.
Mole s sentencing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Jan. 11, according to the news release. The court rejected the prosecution s move to revoke Mole s bond, so he will remain free until he is sentenced. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, and a prison sentence is mandatory in this case. ....
