Print The leadership team of the national Volunteers of America have accepted the resignation of the San Diego executive director and replaced the entire local board of directors in the wake of an audit that turned up self-dealing and misuse of public funds. Gerald McFadden, who ran the San Diego affiliate of the social-services charity for more than 15 years, left the nonprofit earlier this month, according to Brian Gavin, a senior vice president for the Volunteers of America national organization. “The former board voted to relinquish the affiliate’s charter back to the national office and a new board will be established consisting of members of the San Diego regional community,” Gavin said by email last week. “The former CEO resigned and retired.” ....

While working in the company’s accounting software, he noticed some odd payments to new companies he’d never seen. The charity was paying one company, JER International, for a confusing range of products. JER sold fitness equipment, trash bags, foam skin cleanser, copy paper and even living room sofas, according to receipts obtained by Voice of San Diego from San Diego County auditors. ....
