He was educated at penn state where he took his bachelors degree in 2001 and at the university of maryland where he earned a masters degree in 2003 and a phd in 2008. The department of history at maryland awarded him its eb an jean smith prize in political history. He won the prize in 2010. He is already the author of several books including two lincoln titles. Abraham lincoln entries and in the and treason in the civil war, and most recently, emancipation the union army and Abraham Lincoln. More than two dozen articles have appeared under his name in scholarly journals and Popular History magazines. In 2005, he won the john t. Hubble price for the best article in
