When disaster strikes, being prepared can make a big difference.
A preparedness tool called ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System will be activated in Oregon on March 11. Already in place in California, ShakeAlert detects significant earthquakes quickly and sends an alert to people before shaking arrives at their location. The time between receiving the alert and feeling the shaking gives people critical seconds to protect themselves.
No action needs to be taken on March 11 and no sign up is required, commented Paula Fasano Negele, public information officer for Oregon Office of Emergency Management. These important alerts come automatically on most cell phones making a distinctive sound and a text message that reads Earthquake Detected! Drop, Cover, Hold On. Protect Yourself. ....

Willamette Meteorite restored after vandals paint it gold
The bronze copy in West Linn s Fields Bridge Park had been spray-painted gold
After being spray-painted gold in the past week, the replica of the Willamette Meteorite in Fields Bridge Park has been restored to its original color (though a few small spots of gold remain).
The one-fifth-scale bronze replica of the actual Willamette Meteorite, which currently is displayed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, is the centerpiece of the Ice Age Floods Interpretive Trail along the Tualatin River at Fields Bridge.
Parks and Recreation Director Ken Warner said the parks department filed a report with the West Linn Police Department, as it does with all cases of vandalism in parks. ....
