Letters: The public has been bamboozled by the blurring of guidance and law

SIR – Your recent leader and letters (May 25) drew attention to the multiple nonsenses emanating from Whitehall – particularly the ruling on amateur choirs. Yesterday there was also further confusion over travel rules.
What the public needs is a guide on which of the Government’s pronouncements are merely advice and which have the force of law.
I fear that we have become so supine during the pandemic and the lockdowns that we are losing the confidence to trust our own judgment.

SIR – The suggestion that our freedoms will be curtailed beyond June 21 (“Vaccine not enough to avoid self-isolating”, report, May 25) has nothing to do with protection from the virus and everything to do with extending control over us. ....

Future of mathematics on global stage looks brighter thanks to £20 million funding boost
The Fry Building, where the Heilbronn Institute and University of Bristol School of Mathematics are based. The building features a unique sunscreen façade in the style of a Voroni diagram, named after the Russian mathematician Georgy Voroni, which are created by scattering points at random on a plane.
A £20 million investment to champion innovation and nurture the greatest minds in mathematical sciences across the UK has been awarded today to the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research (HIMR).
The grant from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) forms part of a £300 million Government funding package over the next five years to advance excellence in mathematics, for which HIMR is renowned worldwide. ....
