SIR: In 1967, whilst the uk pop charts featured hits such as Good Vibrations, Yellow Submarine and Strangers in the Night, across the pond ‘Winchester Cathedral’ became a number one hit in the USA charts.
Fifty years later it was suggested to the then Dean that the Cathedral might mark this anniversary. Geoff Stephens, the song’s composer and lyricist, was approached about this and not only gave his full support but also rewrote the lyrics to celebrate and help with the Cathedral Appeal. ....
