Geneva District 304 parents stage protest ahead of school board meeting, demand students return to classrooms full-time

GENEVA, Ill. (WLS) A group of west suburban parents protested ahead of a school board meeting demanding that all students be back in their classrooms full-time immediately. Geneva District 304 was one of the first districts in the area to move to hybrid learning earlier during the pandemic. But with spring nearing, some parents believe it s time to get students back in class more than two days a week. It s absolutely dreadful. Those are kind words, said Jean Smith. She s ready for her grade school children to go back to class full-time. With where we are now, a year out, with the science and the numbers, we definitely need to see our kids in school, full time, 5 days a week, she said.

Some Suburban Parents Question Remote Learning as More Students Return to Classroom

“Twelve months into this, they are not equipped emotionally to continue with this isolation. Their development depends on interaction,” Kimball said. According to the school district’s website, the plan is to move to hybrid learning in the fourth quarter if conditions permit. But the group Reopen Evanston Schools said the district has not updated the community on how it will make decisions about reopening. “What metrics do we need to see that we can bring our kids back safely? I think the kids and the parents want a little bit of hope,” Kimball said. Meanwhile, some parents in west suburban Geneva said District 304 is moving “backwards” after it recently replaced Friday in-person lessons with remote learning.
