Nominated twice for the pulitzer prize. The author of i think one of the great books about the civil war, america which was in the library a few years ago talking about it and talking about the importance of the evangelical religion in american politics leading up to the civil war and in some senses, the decline of evangelical religion, certainly the righteousness of evangelical religion after the civil war in the beginning of postreconstruction era and jim crow. It is i think a great book that refrains from what we have thought about the civil war and what we thought about race and religion in america. In a sense, you get his generation whose new book, when government was good is the subtitle. It may seem like a distant path for some of us today. ALJAZAM America Tonight September 22, 2013

They loved the navy. They loved the fleet. The fleet that they helped build and sustain. Once again, they have the ceremony under way. One week since the gunman open fired at the nation navy yard e nations capitol. Well live in. The report that no service men were killed. Just civilians and contractors. And that is flat wrong. These patriots designed and built our ships. They sustained and set the standards for our ships. They connected us to each other and to the fleet, and they protected and sustained our headquarters. These 12 members of our navy team, our navy family, they were killed in the line of duty. They died in service to our navy, in service just a that the committed to just as any of us in uniform. For that service we honor them. For that service we will never forget them. I salute these american heroes. I want to bring in my colleague who is joining us from washington, where she is just outside of the ceremony. If you will, jeanne, give us a preview of what we can expect ....

You cant just to duck responsibility for the past and refused to spell out what you do in the future and expect people to give you a blank check. You can sit and wait for the british people to come back to you, but dont hold your breath. [applause] if there is one area all of the parties need to put politics aside, it is europe. Britains place in it. The conservatives have this bizarre view that we can turn our back on europe and still lead in the world. As if we will be taken seriously by the american, chinese, indian, all the big superpowers of the modern world when we are isolated and irrelevant in our own backyard. The truth is, we stand tall in washington, in beijing, in delhi , in brussels, paris, berlin. I know it. I have worked there. I have seen with my own eyes what can be achieved for britain by engaging with our neig ....
