Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III urges FAMU grads to shape future

In his first commencement address since being sworn in as U.S. Secretary of Defense in January, retired four-star General Lloyd James Austin III challenged graduates of Florida A&M University Saturday to start now on their journey in helping to shape the nation’s future.
Austin, originally scheduled to address graduates of the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities in person, instead delivered his remarks livestreamed from the Pentagon, where his Senate confirmation in January places him as the country’s first African American to serve as Secretary of Defense.
It marks another milestone for Austin, who grew up in nearby Thomasville, Georgia, and later graduated from West Point before embarking on a decorated 41-year career in the military. ....
