We studied the DNA of African and Asian leopards and found big differences between the two

Leopards are among the most widespread carnivores today, living in a wide range of habitats, from deserts to rainforests, and from the lowland plains to the mountainous highlands.
Over the past century, they’ve experienced extreme habitat losses due to human activity, both directly from hunting and indirectly from habitat reduction and prey competition. This has led to the land they occupy being reduced by over 50% in Africa, and over 80% in Asia, involving the local extinction of many populations.
Genetic analysis of leopards is important to understand their population history, structure and dynamics. Particularly important is the analysis of whole nuclear genomes, which means all the DNA contained in the cell core – approximately 2.5 billion DNA bases (pairs of DNA building blocks). ....

Brazilian P1 variant now second most prevalent coronavirus strain in the country

Known as P1, the strain is believed to be more infectious than the original and the other mutations, but it is unclear by how much.
According to the latest data from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), P1 now accounts for at least 434 COVID-19 cases across 28 jurisdictions. This is the first time that the P1 variant has come in second.
Health authorities are concerned that the P1 strain may have the ability to evade the antibodies the body produces from a prior coronavirus infection, or the antibodies supposedly triggered by the coronavirus vaccines. Most of the COVID-19 patients with the P1 variant are in Massachusetts, where 102 cases were found. Other states that have a significant number of P1 cases are Illinois with 93, Florida with 87 and California with 39. ....

Study examines breast cancer genes in Caribbean

1 in 7 Caribbean-born breast, ovarian cancer patients have gene mutation
A study of seven Caribbean countries has shown that an average of one in seven Caribbean-born people on those islands who have been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer carry at least one inherited gene mutation.
Of the seven territories – Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Cayman, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica and Haiti – Cayman had the second-lowest rate of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer at 6.3%, after Jamaica, which had 4.9%. The Bahamas had the highest proportion, with 23%, with Barbados at 18%, Trinidad and Tobago at 12%, Dominica at 8.8% and Haiti at 6.7%.
Oncologist Dr. Judith Hurley, who is a researcher at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Centre at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has been studying racial disparities in breast cancer rates since 2002. She was prompted to carry out the study after noticing that many of her Bahamian breast cancer patients were unusu ....
