it is sunday, june 24th. good morning, everyone. i m randi kaye. so glad you re with us. we start this morning with pretty extreme weather. in the gulf of mexico, we have tropical storm debby. it is still building strength as it moves closer to the gulf coast and communities are bracing now. in colorado, firefigers are trying to contain a wild fa fire cobb suming 200 square miles and it could take at least three more weeks before contained. in minnesota, floodwater left a path of destruction through duluth. people areurning home to devastation and loss. that includes saying goobye to those homes badly damaged by the floodin flooding. we have to topple it into the hole because we can t save it. it s a good little building. i wish my granddaughter could have enjoyed it as much as my dauger did. let s get back to tropical storm debby. bonnie schneider is in our meteorologist center this mornin morning. randi, right now, we are king quite a bit of extreme weather. let
plunge. the dow slid 251 point, today. there s only one other day this year that it has been worse. people are afraid. they re afraid of the blood gushing out of europe s veins. they re afraid of the blood draining out of jobs here in the united states. ultimately, they re most afraid that congress is too cold-blooded to do anything about it. to make a deal that could instill confidence again in the greatest economy on earth. yes, that is, still, by leap, bounds, everything, everybody, the united states of america. instead, by the end of the day, the credit rating agency moody s downgraded america s five biggest banks. specifically blaming fear about stability in the global financial system. that means it s going to cost those banks more to operate. that means they have less money to lend to all the borrowers in this country. about the only person feeling good today, billionaire larry ellison. it s good when you got $36 billion and buying an entire island in hawaii is pocket
in the country this year. it spread overseas, rumors about it all day didn t happen until after the closing bell. there s the dow, down 2%. the big bank downgrades, including the biggest banks in europe, moody s saying that anybody with a lot of exposure to the credit markets, they were going to downgrade them. the banks one by one saying they disagree with the downgrades and some of the stocks are moving up a little bit. that s the bank part of it. banks are what pumps the oxygen through the financial system. when you have people worried talking about a slowing global economy, it caused all kinds of concerns. we re concerned about slowing numbers from china, from europe, from germany in particular. we had all kinds of macro economic data that was starting to show what many people feared that the global economy is slowing down. that means american factories are selling fewer things and american business owners are not hiring people because they are worried about the global sl
