Govt orders probe after plane crash

Authorities ordered an investigation into the crash of an Air Force plane that overshot a runway killing 47 soldiers on board, three civilians on the ground and injuring dozens.
Some passengers on the Lockheed C-130 jumped free seconds before the plane crashed on Sunday and burst into flames, officials cited witnesses as saying.
The aircraft, carrying recently graduated troops bound for counter-insurgency operations, had been trying to land at Jolo airport in southern Sulu province.
All 96 passengers on board had been accounted for, with 49 military personnel injured as well as four civilians on the ground, military spokesman Maj Gen Edgard Arevalo said. ....

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 5) The Armed Forces of the Philippines has concluded its rescue and retrieval operations on the Air Force C-130 aircraft that crashed in Patikul, Sulu, leaving 52 dead the country s deadliest military air disaster in at least four decades.
We have already completed our rescue and retrieval (operation), AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said in a text message to CNN Philippines on Monday.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirmed on Monday night that the latest death toll in Sunday s crash increased to 52 after the remains of two earlier missing soldiers were recovered.
The crash left 49 fatalities and 47 injured persons from the military. ....

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 5) The Armed Forces of the Philippines ruled out foul play in the plane crash that killed 50 in Patikul, Sulu over the weekend.

The Source on Monday, AFP Spokesperson Major Gen. Edgard Arevalo said it is unlikely that the Air Force C-130, which carried 90 passengers, was attacked before crashing in Barangay Bangkal on Sunday.
At the moment, looking at the circumstances we have at hand, the information that we know, we are ruling out any foul play. I have been asked previously if the aircraft could have been attacked. Based from the circumstances and the information at hand, these are not among the possible reasons why this accident happened, Arevalo said. ....
