Reggae Boyz defender Oniel Fisher is now searching for a new club after DC United chose not to offer him a new contract for the 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
The team has also declined their 2021 options on Mohammed Abu, Earl Edwards Jr, Felipe Martins, Gelmin Rivas, and Axel Sjoberg.
Fisher has become the second Jamaican defender to be released by their club in November after Alvas Powell s option was declined by Inter Miami. ....

2020 MLS Expansion Draft: No D.C. United players selected by Austin FC

D.C. United left some notable contributors unprotected today, but Austin FC looked elsewhere during the 2020 MLS Expansion Draft today. Despite having to make nine players available for MLS’s newest club, the Black-and-Red could breathe a sigh of relief.
The reality is that expansion drafts are inherently bad for existing clubs, and the way MLS implements them is a particular sticking point. Aside from the obvious issue with having one team totally control a transaction, the five teams that lost players to Austin today receive $50,000 in General Allocation Money from MLS, which is safely below the trade market value of any player selected. ....

Of that group, eleven are under contract for 2021. Odoi-Atsem, who established himself as first-choice at right back over the final third of the season, has been given a bona fide offer by United, which makes this choice to protect him a strong indicator that he will eventually sign a new deal.
Importantly, United does not have to protect any Homegrown players who retain their Generation Adidas status. While this rubric was used years ago to declare that Bill Hamid had “graduated” out of the GA program (which in turn means they have to choose to protect him), it also means that Jacob Greene, Moses Nyeman, Kevin Paredes, Donovan Pines, and Griffin Yow cannot be selected by Austin. ....

Will D.C. United lose any players to Austin FC in the 2020 MLS Expansion Draft?

Austin FC’s Expansion Draft is this evening, and for D.C. United, it’s a straightforward event: losing a player is bad, not losing one is good. Fortunately, the odds are in the Black-and-Red’s favor, as Austin can only take five players from a group of 16 teams, but it’s nonetheless a possibility that United ends up losing a player and getting just $50,000 in General Allocation money (far less than their market value) in return.
We talked about the protected list yesterday, and you can see the full draft rules here, but this piece is going to focus on the likelihood of United losing a player. After poring over the unprotected players around the league, looking at what Austin has and how they’re building their team, we think we’ve got some idea of how this is going to shake out from a D.C. perspective. ....
