During the 2021 Lamar Lively Teacher of the Year ceremony Friday morning at Polk Street United Methodist Church, 50 teachers from across the Amarillo Independent School District were honored as teachers of the year, while also taking the time to look back on the past year and how COVID-19 made an impact on the 2020-21 school year.
Amarillo ISD has been honoring teachers in this fashion since 1989, district officials stated. Judges, consisting of district officials, students and community members, read and evaluated anonymous applications they received for teachers of the year.
While 50 total teachers were honored, the district highlighted two specific teachers as the districts’ 2020-21 elementary teacher of the year and secondary teacher of the year, respectively. Three finalists were chosen for each, consisting of the scores the judges tallied during the evaluation process. ....

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Amarillo ISD 2021 Elementary Teacher of the Year is Gayla Martin and Secondary Teacher of the Year is Heather Blythe-Yaws.
The honorees were announced at the annual Lamar Lively Teacher of the Year Breakfast, sponsored by Education Credit Union.
Martin teaches fourth-grade reading and social studies at South Georgia Elementary.
Blythe-Yaws is an AP and International Baccalaureate biology teacher, as well as the cheer sponsor at Amarillo High School. ....
