As Gaston County struggles through the peak of COVID-19 pandemic and tops 300 virus related deaths, health leaders are laying the groundwork to expand weekly vaccination clinics that have so far smashed attendance estimates. County health leaders will begin adding a second session of COVID-19 vaccinations each Wednesday at the Gastonia Farmers Market. Those clinics will be added to sessions held each Friday at the same location. County officials administered Moderna s COVID-19 vaccine at sessions on Jan. 8 and Jan. 15. That formulation requires recipients receive a second dose of the vaccine 28 days later. The county will administer a Pfizer vaccine beginning Friday, that requires a 21-day period between the first and second shots. ....

Stowe was among the first group of Gaston County residents over the age of 75 to receive a vaccine Friday at the Gastonia Farmers Market. Still spry as he looks ahead to his 100th birthday in July, Stowe said the threat of COVID-19 has largely kept him confined at home besides weekly trips to the grocery store and pharmacy. He s glad a viable vaccine is now available. It s very important that everybody gets this shot, Stowe said. It s not going to be knocked out until everybody gets it. It s going to take another year and we ll still be having casualties, so I urge everybody from the bottom of my heart to take the shot. ....
