Younger, vulnerable are vax eligible Mar. 24

Johnson & Johnson s newly approved COVID-19 vaccine will arrive in Gaston County this week, enabling the county to reach some of its most vulnerable residents.
The 1,200 doses the agency is set to receive will double the county s weekly vaccine capacity through March 5. GEMS workers will administer those doses to protect harder-to-reach populations like homebound seniors and the homeless.
“This opportunity to get additional folks vaccinated now is possible thanks to a tremendous partnership between our department and public health,” GEMS Chief Mark Lamphiear said. “We are dedicated as an agency and a county to making sure anyone who wants a COVID-19 shot can get one.” ....

The Gaston Gazette
Gaston County will have enough COVID-19 vaccine to complete all its scheduled appointments Friday after state leaders warned last week vaccine supplies may be hard to come by in some parts of the state.
Tom Keigher, chairman of the Gaston County Board of Commissioners, confirmed Tuesday morning that vaccine supplies will be available this week even as local leaders continue to lobby the state for more doses of vaccine.
We ve rounded up enough vaccine through Friday, Keigher said. I think we are going to get a few doses of vaccine from Kintegra and we are still hoping the state will send more our way, but if not we still have what we need. ....

Gaston COVID death toll hits 325

The roll out of COVID-19 vaccine across North Carolina, including in Gaston County, has been slow and steady to date.
That may change going forward according to state health officials Friday who warned that some counties may get little or no vaccine next week.
North Carolina Gov Roy Cooper told Raleigh s ABC affiliate Friday that the state had completed some 625,000 vaccinations to date but said there s not nearly enough vaccine to go around.
Cooper said by Monday or Tuesday the state will have used all of the first vaccine doses provided by the federal government.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services confirmed Friday that means the state will receive 120,000 doses weekly going forward. A large portion of those doses next week are committed to large scale events, like the one held Friday at Charlotte Motor Speedway that vaccinated some 16,000 people in a single day. ....
