Two days ago, a planning meeting of Prof. Charles Soludo, aspirant for the forthcoming November Anambra governorship election was attacked, three policemen guarding him were killed and some of his close collaborators abducted. It is often the case that candidates considered to be popular are regularly attacked, killed or frightened off from the contest. Mainstream politicians remain convinced that their money, thugs and connections can get them “elected” as soon as they clear out popular candidates from the arena. This mentality, that it remains possible to rig oneself into office, is very corrosive of democratic culture and most be combatted.

The Lagos State Government has announced the closure of the Falomo Bridge for repair works following the Federal Government approval for six weeks from Sunday, 14th March to Friday 30th April, 2021.
In a statement released by the state’s Ministry of Transportation on Friday, the Commissioner, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, stated that the repair works would run on a 24-hour shift in phases to enable the contractor complete repairs within the estimated set time and minimise the expected inconveniences for road users.
He further explained that the first stage of the repairs would cover the Victoria Island bound lane of the bridge which will be closed to traffic. According to him, motorists heading towards Victoria Island will be diverted to the Ikoyi bound lanes to create a counter-flow.

Question:
Verse 4:34 of the Qur’an reads: “As for those from whom you fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and strike them.” Is this a justification of domestic abuse and violence against women?
I answered him as follows:
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
My Brother, the “striking” in this verse is a symbolic gesture meant as a last resort for men whose wives refuse to stop committing major sins. There are very strict restrictions upon this concession and it is not a justification for a man to physically harm his wife.
Allah the Most High said:
“Do not harm them in order to straighten them.” (Surah At-Talaq, 65:6)
