Argument over Amish and being called racist may have led to fire death


CARROLLTON An argument over being called a racist and disagreement about the Amish apparently led to a Carroll County man dousing a housemate in gasoline, and setting him on fire, according to testimony during a court hearing Tuesday.
Arlen A. Atkinson, 53, is charged with aggravated murder, aggravated arson, murder and felonious assault in the Jan. 24 death of Scot E. Hupp, 58.
Both men lived in a three-bedroom brick bungalow at Bellflower and Lilly roads NW in Brown Township. The fire occurred about 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 23.
Rick Stauffer, a Carroll  County sheriff s deputy and investigator assigned to the Carroll County Prosecutor s Office, testified at Tuesday s hearing before Carroll County Municipal Court Judge Gary L. Willen. ....

Suspect arrested after Carroll County group home resident set on fire


MINERVA  A Carroll County man has been charged with aggravated murder and aggravated arson in the death of a fellow group home resident whom investigators say was set on fire.
Arlen A. Atkinson, 53, is accused of retrieving gasoline, dumping it on Scot E. Hupp, 58 and setting him on fire, said Carroll County Sheriff Dale Williams.
Williams said the two men both lived at a group home at Lilly and Bellflower roads NW in Brown Township.
An argument at the group home led to the death, according to the sheriff s office. Deputies and firefighters were called at 5:36 p.m. Saturday to the home. ....
