Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland has won best picture at a singular, sometimes bizarre, Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. A strong favourite since it took top prizes at the Venice and Toronto film festivals over six months ago, the poetic drama stars Frances McDormand as a sexagenarian woman travelling the American west in the years after the 2008 crash.
Zhao, a Chinese-American, became the second woman and the first woman of colour to win best director at the Oscars. “I have always found goodness in the people I met everywhere I went in the world,” Zhao said from the podium. “This is for everyone who has the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves and to hold on to the goodness in each other — no matter how difficult it is to do that.” ....

Making Academy Awards history in the most awkward way imaginable, Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar for best actor for his performance in “The Father,” becoming the oldest winner ever.
Hopkins, however, was not on hand to accept the award, which for the first time in Oscars history was placed at the very end of the telecast, after “Nomadland” had won best picture and Frances McDormand took home best actress. Presenter Joaquin Phoenix instead had to accept the award on Hopkins’ behalf, providing an altogether abrupt and anti-climatic conclusion to the most unusual Academy Awards ceremony in modern history. ....

They were a long time coming, but the 93rd Academy Awards proved to be well worth the wait – with a star-studded ceremony taking place across various venues in LA last night.

As many had predicted, Nomadland proved to be the most successful film on the night, walking away with three massive awards in the shape of Best Picture, Best Director for Chloe Zhao and Best Actress for Frances McDormand.
Perhaps the biggest shock was the win in the Best Actor category for Sir Anthony Hopkins, who won ahead of the late Chadwick Boseman and became the oldest person ever to be awarded an acting Oscar in the process. ....

“I really didn’t. I am grateful to the Academy, and thank you,” Hopkins said. The two-time Oscar winner also paid tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, who had been expected to be crowned Best Actor for
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which was his final film after he lost a private battle with cancer at age 43 last August.
“I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too early,” Hopkins added.
