landfall as a hurricane. ian is moving inland as a post-tropical cyclone. even though it s been downgraded, officials warn it could cause heavy rain, wind, and floods. in south carolina the storm flooded homes and vehicles along the shoreline. you can see in this video high winds pushed the storm surge even higher, and two piers, one in pawleys island and one in myrtle beach both partially collapsed. officials are warning residents to avoid leaving their homes, to steer clear of floodwaters that could pose hidden dangers. the obvious one of the water itself can isolate people, drown people. but it can also hide downed power lines, obstacles in the water, even contaminants in the water. so the waters themselves are the most dangerous. ian slammed into southwest florida as a severe category 4 hurricane on wednesday. it almost became a category 5, packing sustained winds at 150 miles an hour. the storm is now being blamed for at least 45 deaths, though, officials bel ....
across the country. and democrats in a race against the recess, trying to pass president biden s key agenda items with the midterm elections looming. how much can congress get done? we re grateful that you are starting your week with us, bright and early this sunday, july 31st. good morning, sarah. good morning to you, boris. great to be with you. we begin today with an update to the ongoing weather emergency in kentucky. the death toll there continues to rise as search and rescue crews make their way through flooded areas and we are expecting yet another round of heavy rain and flash flooding today. at least 25 people are confirmed dead. it is still hard to get the exact number of missing with one local mayor calling the death toll only the tip of the ic iceberg. complicating the response, rushing waters washed away roads and destroyed bridges making search and rescue efforts all the more difficult. i m worried we re going to be finding bodies for weeks to ....
kentucky showing some of the damage left behind by historic floods that killed at least 25 people. you can see floodwaters slammed this school bus into a building, just devastated there, wrecked cars and downed trees are everywhere. tomorrow eastern kentucky is expecting several more rounds of rain that could make this flooding worse. electricity is out in many places. state officials say 21 drinking water systems have been damaged by rushing waters. there have been more than 600 water rescues. among the dead are four young kids from one family, the youngest just two years old. the governor of that state said it s vast destruction in that area he s worried they ll find victims for weeks to come. this is still an emergency situation, we are in search and rescue mode. again, that count is going to continue to go up. we don t lose this many people in flooding. this is a real tough one. cnn s evan joins me now. just incredible footage of the devastation where you re at ....
So we re volunteer groups. we don t have the fancy radio systems like everyone else. so we rely 100% on our cellphones, so we desperately need cellphone reception. i heard they have lots of portable cellphone towers, but they haven t put any around here. that s why i m doing this interview by phone. i m at a love s truck stop and we re all sleeping in our vehicles. it s been an absolute nightmare with the communication, so we appreciate you getting that message out there. we ll make sure to repeat it again and again to hopefully get something done about that because i noticed myself when we got here late last night, the cellphone reception is spotty at best, and it s so important in a rescue effort to be able to communicate with everybody around you. gary, what s your message to folks here in south florida southwest florida that might feel overwhelmed by everything that they ve witnessed? you have experienced a lot of these storms in the past. ....
You ve seen communities rebuild. what would your message be to those folks that are in a very difficult situation right now in rebuilding? just that, you know, try to find a little patience, you know. it will all get back together. it will take a little time, but you will get it back together as soon as they can get through this initial rescuing stage and all that. then they can start getting, you know, the equipment in to start moving all these boats that are on top of each other, start getting like fort myers beach it used to be a paved road. it now has 2 to 3 feet of sand on it. again, it will get fixed. i was in may field, kentucky, i was in eastern kentucky, kentucky for the flood. we tell everybody, i know it looks bad right now, but, you know, it will get better. gary hanner, the president of the united cajun navy. we appreciate that message of hope. ....
