Michigan wolves require population control, hunt supporters argue Updated Feb 24, 2021; Facebook Share LANSING, MI Michigan Senate Republicans have advanced a resolution that urges wildlife officials to hold a gray wolf hunting and trapping season in the Upper Peninsula this year following the loss of endangered species protections. The non-binding resolution, S.R. 15, is sponsored by Sen. Ed McBroom, a lawmaker from the western U.P. who chaired a Wednesday, Feb. 24 hearing in which he criticized state officials for delaying the decision on another hunt until mid-2022. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says it’ll take until at least next June to update the state’s 2015 wolf management plan and hold a public opinion survey. The DNR wants to finish those before deciding on another hunt. ....
Ewen The Iron Mountain Daily News did a great disservice by not fact-checking a column by Gary Gorniak published Jan. 15. When Gorniak spoke at the Western CAC meeting earlier this month, he never mentioned wolves in the town of St. Ignace or the young lady who climbed a tree to escape a wolf. This is likely because the Michigan Department of Natural Resources biologists who attended the meeting and record and investigate such events would have refuted these stories. I am Gary Gorniak, president of the Straits Area Sportsmen’s Club, vice president of The Upper Peninsula Sportsmen’s Alliance and vice chairman of the East U.P. Department of Natural Resources Citizens Advisory Council. I want start off by saying I am not anti-wolf the gray wolf has a place in wildlife. But like all wildlife, the gray wolf has to be managed. You can’t pick and choose to manage one without affecting the other, especially as skilled a predator as the wolf. As you will soon see, our 2020 deer season in the U.P. was a disaster and will probably go down as one of the worst in history. Our deer herd in the U.P. is in serious decline. Predators wolves in particular have decimated our deer herd. Sure, we know some areas are worse than others but overall they are taking a severe toll on our deer. I also know that there are other issues affecting our deer herd, such as loss ....
