Teton Saltes Named Winner of Wuerffel Trophy BRISTOL, Conn. Teton Saltes was named the 2020 winner of the Wuerffel Trophy, becoming the first major award winner in the history of Lobo Football. The honor was announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN. During the show he was also honored for being named to the 2020 Allstate/AFCA Goodworks Team Captain. It was a night of several firsts for the award itself, as Saltes became the Wuerffel Trophy’s first recipient from the Mountain West and the award was presented on the prestigious awards show itself. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the awards show was held virtually with Saltes earning the honor from the Tow Diehm Football Complex on UNM’s campus. Also on the show were head coach Danny Gonzales as well as Saltes’ family members in Arizona and on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. ....

Last week, he was voted as the 2020 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team Captain for his community service contributions. Saltes Named Finalist for Wuerffel Trophy FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. – Teton Saltes has been named as one of three finalists for the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy announced. Saltes was a semifinalist last year, and he becomes UNM’s second finalist in the last four years, joining Garrett Adcock, who was a finalist in 2016. The Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” is presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world. The award has honored over 1,300 nominees since its inception in 2005. ....
