US officials testify on domestic terrorism in wake of Capitol attack

Their appearance before the Senate Appropriations Committee comes amid a flurry of congressional hearings examining the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. The hearing also highlights a broader debate over the federal approach to domestic terror, which has lawmakers and civil rights groups weighing in on whether the U.S. needs new statutes or designations to respond to increasing threats.
Garland, who helped prosecute the Oklahoma City bombing early in his legal career, has emphasized his commitment to combating domestic extremism since becoming attorney general. Last week, he testified that foreign and domestic terrorism threats “keep me up at night.”

Six House Democrats ask Garland to review case of lawyer placed under house arrest over Chevron suit

Chevron then took legal action against Donziger in the U.S. under the Racketeer-Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statute. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled in the company’s favor, and Donziger has been under house arrest since August 2019 over criminal contempt charges incurred during his appeal.
Kaplan took the unusual step of appointing private counsel to prosecute the case against Donziger after prosecutors with the Southern District of New York refused.
Seward & Kissel, the firm Kaplan named in the case, has at least two clients who have received “significant funding” from an investment fund whose vice chairman sits on Chevron’s board, according to a filing from Donziger’s lawyers. ....

Progressive group ramps up pressure on Justice Breyer to retire

Demand Justice, an advocacy group led by a former top aide to Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer
The group launched its effort Friday and wants Breyer, 82, to step down so that President Biden
“We are now firmly in the window when past justices have announced their retirement, so it s officially worrisome that Justice Breyer has not said yet that he will step down. The only responsible choice for Justice Breyer is to immediately announce his retirement so President Biden can quickly nominate the first-ever Black woman Supreme Court justice,” said Brian Fallon, the executive director of Demand Justice and a former top aide to Schumer. ....

Pressure builds on Manchin to back Biden relief bill

The aide said Manchin would face serious political backlash if he derailed Biden’s plans to pass a major coronavirus relief package.
“It would be politically insane for Manchin to do that,” the aide said.
“He knows that with this power he has the ability to get a lot of money for his state. If he’s just the guy who votes against stuff, that goes away,” the aide said, noting Manchin could use his leverage to get one or several of his priorities added to the legislation.
If Manchin supports Democrats in moving Biden’s $1.9 trillion proposal or a similarly sized package, that will allow them to move forward with a straight party-line vote instead of needing to clear the 60-vote threshold most legislation requires. ....
